FAÇADE2017, the 4th international competition of the Society of Façade Engineering is welcoming project entries in the latest quest to find and recognise the most exceptional architectural façades of 2016.
With past winners including such outstanding projects such as Crystal Houses, Amsterdam (TU Delft & ABT Consulting Engineers); Bombay Sapphire Distillery, Hampshire UK (Arup Façade Engineering); Ryerson University, Toronto (Flynn Group); and Al Bahr Towers, Abu Dhabi (Aedis Architects) the bar is now set high, with standards rising with each competition.
The result of the 2016 competition was especially significant in emphasising that project size is irrelevant. The two winning submissions, Crystal Houses (a retail façade in Amsterdam) and 10 New Burlington Street (refurbishment of a Grade 1 listed building in Central London) presented the competition judges with quite different challenges. The outcome was winning entries that recognised markedly different approaches and skill sets in façade engineering and design.
Entries for this year’s competition are welcome from individuals, companies and project teams from around the globe and any façade project completed between 31st December 2015 and 31st December 2016 and not previously entered in an SFE competition will be considered for the awards. Full details including entry form may be found at: http://sfecompetition.org
Winners will be announced at the highly prestigious and exclusive Glass Supper before an audience of some of the World’s leading architects and façade engineers. This year the event takes place on Thursday 7th December in ‘The Tank’ at The Tate Modern in Central London. Once again the event will be attended by the president of RIBA (2017/18), Ben Derbyshire.
The body behind FAÇADE2017, the Society of Façade Engineering, is one of the World’s foremost professional organisations in the field of façade engineering and design. First taking place in 2013 the competition is created, managed and judged by some of the world’s leading exponents of façade engineering and design and recognition through the competition is increasingly regarded as a serious and highly desirable accolade.

He said: “The standard of entries rises with each competition as does its reputation for drawing out and rewarding excellence in this most important aspect of building design. As a façade professional I encourage façade engineers and designers from around the world to submit their projects; to be recognised in this event will place their work before some of the world’s most influential façade specialists.”
The primary sponsor of FAÇADE2016 is Reynaers Aluminium with others including Wedge Group; EH Smith Specialist Façades; Interface Façade Engineering; Powdertech Group; Allies and Morrison; Holloseal Glass; Patrick Ryan Associates; Century Façades; Wintech Façade Engineering; and Skanska.
