Bateman's Row shortlisted for Stirling Prize 2010

Architects Theis + Khan have been shortlisted for the prestigious architectural award, The Stirling Prize 2010, with their contemporary and highly contextual mixed-use gallery office and home building, Bateman's Row in East London.

Accommodation is maximised for both commercial and residential units over six floors. The building comprises of a gallery at basement and ground floors, an office at first floor and a family home at its top with roof terraces providing stunning views of the city. Three further self-contained flats are on first and second floors.

The scheme maximises space and light by climbing vertically in distinct phases over five floors, introducing wide expanses of flush-fixed glazing and a contemporary smooth finish that alternates with rough and robust edges at the ground that respond to its industrial origins and local setting. The internally exposed concrete structure acts as a thermal store, combined with a highly insulated envelope and natural ventilation. Solar panels supplement hot water provision.

The RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded to the architects of the best new European building built or designed in Britain. The winning architect receives a cash prize of £20,000. The prize is named after the great British architect Sir James Stirling (1926-1992).

Bateman's Row has won the RIBA London Building of the Year 2010 and won the Mixed Use Regeneration Development at The Daily Telegraph British Homes Awards 2010.
